A group of like-minded restaurant and bar owners in Houston recognized a need for a public voice for independent businesses in the industry. In 2011, they founded OKRA, the Organized Kollaboration on Restaurant Affairs, to pursue community and charitable initiatives in the city.
At OKRA Charity Saloon, the concept is simple. For each drink purchased, guests receive one vote that they may cast that night for one of four charities selected by OKRA’s members. The charities are all locally based. The charity with the most votes at the end of the month receives the next month’s proceeds. Interested charities, please submit an application.
Our current giving total is $1,168,855.44.
This month, we are raising money for Taste of Science Houston.
Taste of Science is an attempt to address the gap between scientists and the general public. Every field of science has a direct impact on the lives of Houstonians, but they often are unware of the exciting research happening right on their doorsteps.
This is where taste of science comes in. We believe that science should be available to everyone, and that adults don’t become any less curious. So we bring scientists to their local bars, restaurants and cafes, where they can tell their neighbors about their research in a fun and relaxed environment.
Our events are a valuable way of informing the general public of the research happening in their communities, and connecting them to local scientists. From artificial intelligence to space research, from sex to cancer (usually unrelated), all of our events are free and open to anyone with a taste for science!
We are located at 924 Congress St. Houston Texas 77002. Open daily 4pm-2am. Happy hour 4-6:30pm.
