A group of like-minded restaurant and bar owners in Houston recognized a need for a public voice for independent businesses in the industry. In 2011, they founded OKRA, the Organized Kollaboration on Restaurant Affairs, to pursue community and charitable initiatives in the city.
At OKRA Charity Saloon, the concept is simple. For each drink purchased, guests receive one vote that they may cast that night for one of four charities selected by OKRA’s members. The charities are all locally based. The charity with the most votes at the end of the month receives the next month’s proceeds. Interested charities, please submit an application.
Our current giving total is $1,196,589.76.
This month, we are raising money for Pup Squad Animal Rescue.
Pup Squad was formed in 2008 by 4 BARC volunteers. They couldn’t bear to see the numerous pregnant momma dogs and litters of puppies being euthanized or dying from illness in the shelter, and decided to save as many as possible and find them homes. The goal of our rescue is to save as many pregnant dogs, puppies and nursing litters as we can from life on the streets BEFORE they even enter the shelters. We work with BARC and other area shelters and rescue groups to rescue litters from the shelters and the streets as quickly as possible.
Pup Squad is 100% non profit and they depend entirely on our volunteers and fosters to care for these dogs until they find them homes. All of their funds are derived from fundraising and donations and all of the funds go directly towards the care of the dogs. They aren’t a shelter and all of our dogs are cared for in the homes of our amazing foster families.
