Take a Trip to the Farmers' Market

My local farmers' market wasn't quite as bustling as Covent Garden, but it was still pretty busy for early April. This is a great time of the year to check out your local market.

During the height of the growing season my market is really busy and the lineups can get quite long, so farmers don't always have the luxury of a chat.

Of course, there isn't much on offer in Ontario right now, but I did get some beets, some Asian greens, a delicious potato-rosemary loaf of bread, and some whitefish caught in Georgian Bay.

The busiest booth was the woman who sells seeds including a huge variety of heirloom vegetables. My market is year-round so some of the vendors bring in organic produce from around the world. More local farmers will be showing up soon with ramps and asparagus and rhubarb.

More and more markets are popping up. Toronto used to have two or three and now there are 20, with six added just last year.
